Manhattan historical island was discovered during Henry Hudson expedition on September 11, 1609. Manhattan name originates from the language of the Algonquin Indians who resided there and called it Manna Hata. In February 1653, the fledgling city was named New York in honour of the Duke of York (see Manhattan historical map). The population in Manhattan grew from 60,000 in 1800.

The first explorer to see the historical island of Manhattan was the navigator Giovanni da Verrazzano, in 1524 on behalf of the French Crown. He named this place, which was inhabited by Algonquin and Iroquois Indians, New England. The second person to explore the bay of Manhattan was the British Hudson in 1609, who gave his name to the river (see Manhattan historical map).

The oldest inhabitants of the historical island of Manhattan are the Lenapes Indians. This tribe occupied Manhattan along with other Indian colonies such as the Algonquins. Today, the main trace left by the natives is the name "Manhattan" directly inspired by the Indian term "Mannahatta" which can be translated by the small island or hilly island (see Manhattan historical map).

The vintage history of Manhattan begins in 1609 when navigator Henry Hudson ventured out on the river that today bears his name (see Manhattan vintage map). Yes, quite a classy travel souvenir. He noticed that many beavers were inhabiting the vintage area of Manhattan at the time. Beaver skins were fashionable in Europe at the time and the beaver trade was particularly lucrative.

The vintage name Manhattan comes from the lenape, a language of the Algonquin family. First written Manna-hata, the name probably meant island with many hills. Manhattan name first appears in 1609 on Robert Juet logbook (see Manhattan vintage map). In 1610, the name Manahata appears twice, designating both banks of the Mauritius River.

In 1647, Peter Stuyvesant arrived in vintage Manhattan as general manager of the Dutch possessions stretching from Delaware to the Connecticut River. He reorganized the colony of Manhattan, reinforcing its defenses with a wall at the present location of Wall Street as its shown in Manhattan vintage map. Peter Stuyvesant will end his life where he bought land.
